Makayla Smith is a student at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and is pursuing a Fine Arts Studio Major with an emphasis in Photography and a Teaching Artist Minor and Engaged Public Art Minor. Her photographic practice spans over subjects like portraits, wildlife, and landscapes. She enjoys painting large murals to small illustrations and works in acrylic, oil, watercolor and gouache. Within her work she reflects upon her own experience and explores self identity while prioritizing marginalized experiences. She is interested in investigating the idea of how the environment impacts people and loves to explore intersectionality within the human condition and nature. Makayla believes in the importance of representation and expression in arts education. She wants to create a safe space for all ages to learn how to communicate through art for better understanding and togetherness. While nurturing and encouraging creativity to start conversations and solve problems.
Makayla is based out of Iowa County.
