Susmita Kumar is a Rock Island County based Indian Folk Artist. She works on hand-made paper with acrylic paint, plant based dyes and nib pen. Madhubani Art is a style of Indian painting practiced in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. In the past, this style of painting was done using different everyday materials: twigs, matchsticks, and/or fingers. Natural dyes and pigments were used on the walls to decorate houses. Nowadays, it’s done with nib-pens, brushes, and different paints. Madhubani art can be done on paper, canvases, or fabric. Madhubani paintings are characterized by figures that are prominently outlined, like bulging fish-like eyes and pointed noses. The themes of Madhubani paintings usually include natural elements like animals, the sun, the moon, bamboo trees, flowers, and more.
